    Question no.4: Sanskrit and Prakrit used to be two of the most popular languages. Sanskrit was an academic and scholarly language while Prakrit was basically layman’s everyday language, hence establishing it as the most popular one. However the ‘official’ language was obviously Sanskrit as it was patronised by the state. This is evident from the fact that the ‘Prashastis’ ( Eulogies of kings) and copper plate royal charters were inscribed in Sanskrit.
