Question 1 [CLICK ON ANY CHOICE TO KNOW MCQ multiple objective type questions RIGHT ANSWER]
- Between 2001 and 2011, employment growth was lower than growth in the labour force
- Employment elasticity is a measure of how employment growth varies with the growth in labour force
Both 1 and 2
Neither 1 nor 2
"The huge challenge of employment generation needs to be addressed. As the Economic Survey 2014-15 shows, regardless of the data source used, employment growth (1.40 per cent) has lagged behind growth in the labour force (2.23 per cent) between 2001 and 2011. Clearly, employment elasticity of growth, showing the effectiveness of the economic system in generating employment, seems to have declined over time."
Employment elasticity is a measure of how employment varies with economic output.
Example (From 2012): The Planning Commission says that employment elasticity has come down "from 0.44 in the first half of the decade 1999-2000 to 2004-05, to as low as 0.01 during the second half of the decade 2004-05 to 2009-10." An employment elasticity of 0.01 implies that with every 1 percentage point growth in GDP, employment increases by just one basis point. (One basis point is one-hundredth of a percentage point.) It's as good as saying that the extraordinary growth during those years didn't lead to any employment growth at all.
