The violent crackdown by the Pakistan Army led to Awami League leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declaring East Pakistan's independence as the state of Bangladesh on 26 March 1971.

The Ganges Delta (also known as the Sundarbans Delta or the Bengal Delta) is a river delta in the Bengal region of South Asia, consisting of Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal. It is also one of the most fertile regions in the world, thus earning the nickname the Green Delta.

Their final humiliation came in 1765 when the Mughal Emperor Shah Alam granted the diwani of Bengal - the right to collect the land revenue - to the East India Company. From then on, the diwani became the main source of British revenue from India.

Thimphu, also spelled Thimbu, capital of Bhutan. The city, situated in the west-central part of the country, is in the Himalaya Mountains on the Raidak (also called Thimphu, or Wong) River at about 7,000 feet (2,000 metres) above sea level.

The partition divides the province between West Bengal, whose majority was Hindu, and East Bengal, whose majority was Muslim, but left considerable minorities of Hindus in East Bengal and Muslims in West Bengal. While the Muslims were in favour of the partition, as they would have their own province, Hindus opposed it.

Durga Puja is the most important Hindu festival of the Bengalis. This festival is celebrated in the month of October, throughout the West Bengal.

On 12 August 1765, Robert Clive, on behalf of East India Company, accepted the Diwani of Bengal from the then Mughal ruler.

Coastal flooding, combined with the bursting of river banks is common, and severely affects the landscape and society of Bangladesh. 80% of Bangladesh is [floodplain], and it has an extensive sea coastline, rendering the nation very much at risk of periodic widespread damage.

The Sundarbans is a cluster of low-lying islands in the Bay of Bengal, spread across India and Bangladesh, famous for its unique mangrove forests. This active delta region is among the largest in the world, measuring about 40,000 sq km.

Ishwar Chandra Bandyopadhyay (1820-1891), popular as Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, was an educationist, philanthropist, social reformer and a leading figure of the Bengal Renaissance who championed women's education and widow remarriage in an orthodox Hindu society.
